"I had heard about The Work a few years ago from a friend. It sounded interesting, but I never looked into it. I grew up in an extremely abusive home and have had many years of talk and trauma therapy. I have made significant progress in dealing with my depression and anxiety over the years. I am committed to improving myself and healing my past.
When the opportunity to do The Work with Hilary presented itself, I saw it as a chance to explore my beliefs in a different way. I have had many profound experiences during our sessions. I see The Work as a way to get right at the heart of an issue. It has enabled me to quickly see things in a new way and be open to a different perspective on what I have always believed is true.
I have discovered that I do not have to be worried or anxious in order to be ready and willing to act. This has given me a new level of peace in my daily life. I am so thankful for The Work and Hilary and look forward to continued growth."

"When Hillary first reached out to me I wanted to do it just to try and see if it would help. I have tried therapy before and it kind of helped some, so I thought why not. I went into thinking I might get a little something out of it so why not, it is free! [I had offered her a free session.] Little did I know that my thought of how losing my daughter will affect my other daughter could be turned around and not something that has been plaguing me for 4 years. I am a very positive person, not angry, accepting, God believing, and truly believe things happen for a reason, but there has been this nagging, crippling thing I have been carrying.
I was able to work through this with Hillary in 1-1/2 hours and really understand that my thought is not absolute. I have no idea why I never put things into a different perspective. Hillary helped guide me in a nonjudgmental setting with someone that truly understands. I am looking forward to our next session. I still can’t believe this process really works!"
"Doing The Work with Hilary will amplify your joy! I’ve always known how blessed I am but there have been thoughts that were a dark cloud, sometimes overpowering my joy. I’ve spent years feeling like a victim because of four traumatic pregnancies and deliveries and also a miscarriage. I have felt in my heart that I wanted to use my story to help other people but also knew that I had questions that needed to be sorted. Hilary has triggered a healing process for me. Those clouds have begun to clear.
We chose to begin The Work on thoughts I deal with surrounding my three year old son’s diagnosis of HLHS and then needing a heart transplant. Hilary listened to me tell my story and allowed me to express deeply personal feelings from a place of non judgment. She gently helped me to see things from a totally new and unexpected perspective. I honestly can say it’s life changing for me. I’m done with being a victim. I now feel empowered to hold my head up and embrace this life including my son’s diagnosis. That’s not to say I have mastered this. What Hilary has done is given me the tools to release the negative thoughts and stress that have plagued me for years. She has given me an awareness that I lacked.
Hilary truly has a gift for listening. With her own journey through her daughter’s diagnosis she has the insight and expertise to be a great light in the heart community. Open yourself up to her process and you won’t be disappointed!"

Hilary has been amazing in every session. She takes so much time to work so thoroughly with me and very detail-oriented. She makes notes and write down any problems I’m having or struggles to make sure we can work on those at a later session. She always listens, has endless compassion and helps me to see things in a different, more positive light and I love working with her. I have had so many therapists and have done a lot of talk therapy which has been helpful in the past, but I was looking for more of a problem-solving type approach to help me with some grief and trauma. I would recommend her to anyone!! She is amazing.

"Honestly, I’ve experienced such a wide variety of therapists before Hilary and not one (including doing EMDR) has successfully given me the tools that I already have access to, but then unlock those within myself, all by asking a few questions and seeing a whole new way of viewing the world! It’s been the most special, valued experiences and I get excited to go, because I’m loving learning about myself in such Beautiful nurturing ways. Thank you will NEVER be enough."

I finally found the right fit! My son passed away almost 6 years ago from a complication with Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome and Transplant. I had nowhere to turn other than Facebook support groups, which was a start but not a place to stay. I tried numerous counselors that only made things worse or that were no help at all. Not because they didn't try, but because they didn't have the background experience. Hilary lives in the heart world and has experienced similar traumas and ups and downs of having a child with a CHD.
I was hesitant to try and talk about my pain one more time with anyone, but I immediately knew I found my person. Hilary has a passion for helping heart families and angel families. She's an excellent listener, kind, compassionate and supportive. I finally feel a sigh of relief that after all of this time living in pain alone, I found the person who understands and is able to successfully help me work through my family's undealt with grief.
Hilary is amazing! Not only is she easy to talk with she is someone who brings real solutions and healing to your pain. Hilary has walked me through the most traumatic and devastating experiences of my life, losing my second child, and I’m always in awe after every session. I always leave with a healthier outlook on life and I always feel better than I did going in. Thank you so much Hilary!!!

"The Work with Hilary, was transforming for me. I appreciate life differently now, and realize that I have more choice than I once realized about my approach to challenging times."

"Thank you for all you do for me. You have helped to bring a lot of things to clarity in my life, relieving me of a lot of pain. You are such a gentle and loving woman…thanks again."

"We are only 1/3 way through but I have nothing negative to say. I was skeptical to start because I find doing things over Zoom not helpful for me. I like I person conversation. Hillary makes this engaging, as if you’re there in person. The program is well thought through and takes time to explain the process.
I thought we would be doing traditional “talk about feelings” and “how we get through that”. Dead wrong. Hillary’s approach makes you think, deep. You are doing the work to get to your reasons for thinking the way you do. I think of it as retraining your brain from the trauma." - C.D., 38 years old, female
"In this class we learned "the work" this allows us to analyze our beliefs or thoughts. As a family member to someone with CHD this process has been very helpful. As a CHD mom I have seen and experienced some very tough and scary things that you would never want to be faced with. This causes you to start to believe that these things will always happen; however by doing the work you realize those are limiting beliefs and they won't always happen." - E.M, , female
"It has been very therapeutic. It's now changing my routine. As in saying I am a good mom. I'm doing the right things. I used to say I used to fail as a mom. I love the reflection journal because I can go back to the first or second week of class and read what I wrote and then if there is something similar to what I wrote say just recently. After my 12 weeks of this class, I'm thinking of still keeping up with the reflection journal because I feel like it's helping me through my days or my weeks if I do anywhere between 3 to 5 a week." - R. L., 34 years old, female
"I now think everyone needs this class! Hilary's classes have provided me with the ability to shift my perspective and beliefs in positive and uplifiting ways. Through her classes I have been able to work through and process emotional grief I held onto for nearly 20 years. I highly recommend Hilary and her theraputic process for anyone feeling stuck or needing a healthier outlook on things going on in their lives." - A.L., 35 year old female
"I listened to the class again this morning and a light bulb went on. I wrote several beliefs that I can turn around. When something arises during the day, I am going to make a note of it. I am excited about this journey and the progression." - J. B., 60 years old, female
"Having read Byron Katie's book, The Work, I was excited when I heard about the course being offered locally. Initially, I thought group therapy would be awkward so I was reluctant to sign up. However, I discovered breakthrough moments about myself by both listening to the experiences of others and sharing my own feelings. Hilary's knowledge and calming nature as our facilitator has made the therapy comfortable. Most effective have been the weekly guided exercises of questioning my thoughts and writing them down on paper. I have been able to identify my limiting beliefs and break my detrimental thinking patterns, many which have held me back from achieving my goals for years. Awareness brings change. I highly recommend this course." - M.R., 55 year old female
"The class is really helping me out a lot. So far I've always left in a better mood. I would say the biggest impact is I was struggling with one limiting that that was dragging me down, it was effecting pretty much everything in my life. Then I asked myself the "who would I be without that thought" and the answer was clear - much more positive feelings/emotions! It's a similar issue to what I discussed with my therapist about a year or so. Basically I had convinced myself that because I wasn't dating anyone at the time I was a failure/alone forever etc.... definitely a limiting thought. I'm exaggerating a little bit but that was essentially my mindset. After a few months since moving here, I could feel myself getting trapped again in that thought cycle and didn't know how/if I could stop it. But now with the strategies we've learned I feel confident I can lose that limiting thought. In fact I can almost say I already have! " - J.L 25 year old male
"I would not be around today without this class. Truly, things were bad. One of the biggest things I learned, that I will take with me throughout the rest of my life is, consistent gratitude. It taught me to look for the good or look for God when it seemed my life was falling apart and was an absolute mess. It really showed me that God does not give us anything we can't handle." - C.C., 16 year old female
"This class has helped me to work through thoughts that aren't serving me and turn them around so I can fix them. Amazingly, the gratitude journal has also been a great asset, especially when dealing with large amounts of stress.." - C.T., 15 years old, female
"We have been learning how to take our negative beliefs, look them in the eye, and resolve them. This allows for much more peace in our lives." - J.S., 17 year old male
I feel heard and supported, I've never been left without help. It's amazing to see clear perspectives from others, to be coached into new ways of thinking and find what I CAN change in uncomfortable situations." - A.S., 16 years old, female
"In life, question how you feel, look at the other side of the problem and re- evaluate with yourself what you know is true. This class taught me that negative thoughts can put us in bad places, but it's up to us to take control of how we want to feel." - J.S. 18 year old male

Hilary Thompson, CTSS, is a professional speaker and consultant who combines 35 years of lived experience with 15 years of research, data analysis (from her years as a corporate marketing executive), caregiver education, and patient advocacy. A NICU to CICU parent she now leads the world’s largest pediatric heart transplant caregiver support group, serving nearly 3,000 caregivers worldwide, and supports families in coping, advocacy, and conducts research to reduce medical trauma. Hilary founded The HARTT Collaborative to translate research into practical strategies that improve patient, family, and organizational outcomes. She created the THRIVE Framework© and Take Care of the PILOT Framework© to help parents, leaders, and medical providers reduce the burden of medical stress, improve self-care, and support healing, and better life quality for all. She is an award-winning author and speaker.
Summarizing 35 years of medical and caregiving experience in one paragraph? Sure! I was a sick kiddo who, thanks to winning the rare disease lottery, had to learn to walk and talk again in my 20's. I don't mention this a lot in the work I do, but it informed the way I established a passion for medical advocacy, and an appreciation for family caregivers. I put this to use in 2011 when my second child was born with a congenital heart defect. NICU to CICU and seven months later, we came home for the first time. In 2013 due to a series of medical errors, and after a three-month wait, we received our gift of life: a new heart. The exhausting and often frustrating journey to find healing for our whole family radically changed me and created a passion to make things easier for families coming after us. Since 2013 I've co-led a group of nearly 3,000 pediatric transplant caregivers, and now I care for an elderly mama in heart failure.
This is not a life full of medical crisis. This is a life of learning to heal and find joy when life doesn't go the way you had planned. I truly would not change a thing. But if I can share some shortcuts to help others struggle less than we did, then everything we've experienced is even more valuable.
Somewhere in the middle of all of that, I managed to enjoy a successful career in content marketing and digital SEO. I reported to small businesses and Fortune 500 companies. My work was driven by data.
When I "retired" in 2020, I took those skills and transitioned from a part-time volunteer role, to full-time caregiver support. I've been certified in a form of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) called Inquiry Based Stress Relief (IBSR) and it's the foundation of the work I do around the country, supporting caregivers and their families.
In 2025 I realized that, of all the difficulties I was trying to solve for these families, most of them originated in their origin story: a medical crisis for their children. If I could help hospitals, clinics, and these caregivers' workplaces support them better, it would make a much larger impact.

"DO YOU SPEAK ABOUT THINGS OUTSIDE OF IMPROVING MEDICAL TEAM & FAMILY CAREGIVER EMOTIONAL HEALTH AT WORK AND HOME?"
No. I prefer having deep expertise in ONE area over shallow knowledge in SEVERAL areas. But I have a network of speaking professionals and consultants in the medical and corporate worlds and I am happy to refer you to them. I want you to find the best fit for your goals.

YOUR PATIENT OUTCOMES DECLINE WHEN CAREGIVERS AND KIDS STRUGGLE WITH MEDICAL STRESS BUT YOUR TEAM IS ALREADY STRETCHED.
I can help you assess clinic and discharge processes and home support, train your staff on trauma-informed and emotionally safe care, and help your medical staff practice better self-care so they have more to give to those they serve.

I can help you identify employees who are stress, teach ways of leading them, creating understanding and compassionate leaders, and balanced, resilient, and committed employees who are able to THRIVE at work and at home.

Stories are great. Everyone has them. When story meets research to create solutions that translate into practical strategies that transform lives? Now THAT'S a story we want to hear...because it ENDS WITH A SOLUTION.
Hilary Thompson, CTSS, transforms high-stress cultures for leaders and families so people do more than survive, to thrive…drastically improving mental health, retention, and outcomes, by teaching evidence-based, practical strategies coupled with powerful storytelling that drives change.
Ideas need to be solid though. They need to be evidence-based, and proven, but they also need to be introduced using powerful, uplifting, and memorable storytelling. Or else...they never leave the event.
Hilary's promise is that, if we both agree she can help, she will make a positive impact. OR SHE'LL COME BACK AGAIN FOR FREE.
We are committed to long-term positive change.

In this video, you'll discover how healthy stress differs from toxic stress, why resilience is built through support as much as struggle, and how healthcare providers, caregivers, and leaders can create environments where people grow without being unnecessarily harmed. I'll answer questions like:
"Doesn't adversity builds character"
*If challenge and stress help us grow, should we be trying to
reduce them at all?*
"If challenge is good for us, why spend so much time teaching people how to prevent medical trauma?"
Building self-worth and resilience through coaching empowers anyone we coach - whether it be a team, a child, or a friend. Keep it real, friends.
"Average players want to be left alone. Good players want to be coached. Great players want to be told the truth." — Doc Rivers
You can challenge me on this, but in my experience self-worth is the foundation for any good (and the cause of most bad) mental health issues. Companies are smart who help their teams build self-worth, and the same is true for parents.
